Marsupialized Bartholin cyst: what to know

A Bartholin cyst forms when a gland duct near the vaginal opening becomes blocked. If it becomes infected, it may cause an abscess with swelling, tenderness, warmth, or pus. Marsupialisation creates a small lasting opening so gland fluid can drain rather than collecting in a closed pocket. Some discharge, soreness, and light spotting can occur during healing, but the clinical team should explain what is expected in your case.

Keep the area clean and dry according to your discharge instructions. Wash gently, pat dry, wear loose breathable underwear, and use sanitary protection if there is drainage. Take prescribed medicines exactly as directed and avoid inserting anything into the vagina or having sex until your clinician says healing is adequate. Do not squeeze, probe, or try to reopen the wound. A follow-up review can check drainage and healing.

Seek prompt advice if pain or swelling is increasing, the wound becomes very red or hot, discharge smells unpleasant, or you develop fever or feel unwell. Contact the service that treated you if the opening appears closed and a lump is returning. Severe pain, heavy bleeding, faintness, or difficulty passing urine needs urgent assessment.
