A plaster of Paris manufacturer produces calcium-sulfate material that clinicians mix with water to form supportive orthopaedic casts. The product may be supplied as powder or in prepared bandage rolls. Its purpose is to create a mouldable shell around a body part while an injury heals, not to diagnose or treat the underlying problem by itself.

When moistened, plaster bandage becomes workable and can be shaped around the limb. It then hardens into a rigid support. A clinician chooses the layers, fit and position according to the injury, swelling and expected movement. The cast must leave room for normal circulation and should not press on one area of skin.
