What should you know about manual trigger point release?

Short answer

Manual trigger point release uses focused pressure, stretching and movement to address a tender, tight area within a muscle.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Local versus spreading, numb or burning sensations

What a trigger point is

A trigger point is a sensitive spot in a muscle or its surrounding tissue that may reproduce local pain or pain felt nearby when pressed. During manual release, a physiotherapist may use sustained pressure, slow tissue movement, stretching or active contraction and relaxation. Pressure should be tolerable and adjusted to your response.

This approach may be included for [Myofascial Pain Syndrome](/conditions/myofascial-pain-syndrome/), but a tender spot can have several contributors, including workload, posture, sleep and stress. The examination should also consider joints, nerves and other causes rather than treating every tender area as a trigger point.

Making treatment useful

Tell the clinician whether the sensation is local, spreading, numb, burning or sharp, and mention bruising, blood-thinning medicine, skin problems or recent injury. After release, gentle movement and a gradual return to normal activity may help you test whether the treated area moves more comfortably.

Ask for a clear home plan: this might involve mobility, strengthening, breathing or changing the load placed on the muscle. Avoid repeatedly pressing a painful spot hard at home, because increased soreness can obscure whether the underlying problem is improving. Dry needling is a separate option that can be discussed when clinically appropriate.

When to get checked

Seek medical advice for unexplained severe pain, progressive weakness, persistent numbness, fever with a hot swollen area, significant bruising or symptoms after major trauma. Stop treatment if you feel faint, develop chest pain or experience rapidly worsening symptoms.

Useful questions

What makes this spot a likely pain source? What other causes have you considered? How much soreness is expected? Which movement should I practise afterward? Would [Trigger Point Therapy](/treatments/manual-and-manipulative-therapy/trigger-point-therapy/) or [Dry Needling](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/dry-needling/) change the plan?

Questions people ask

Is trigger point release the same as deep massage?

Not exactly. It is a targeted technique chosen after assessment and may be combined with movement or exercise.

Is soreness afterward expected?

Some temporary tenderness can occur, but severe, spreading or persistent symptoms should be reported and assessed.
