What should you know about manual stretching physical therapy?

Short answer
Manual stretching physical therapy uses therapist-guided movement to gradually improve flexibility, joint motion and control without forcing a painful range.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What happens in treatment
A physiotherapist checks your active movement, joint stability, strength and symptom response before choosing a position. They may support a limb, guide a joint or add a gentle stretch while you relax or actively assist. The plan may help restore movement after an Ankle Sprain or alongside care for Achilles Tendinitis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Baker's Cyst, Calcific Tendinitis, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Cervical Radiculopathy or Cervical Spondylosis. The target is useful function, not forcing a maximum range.
Using stretching well
Tell the therapist about surgery, fractures, joint instability, nerve symptoms and swelling. A stretch can feel firm, but it should not create sharp pain, electric sensations, marked numbness or a new loss of strength. Learn the home version precisely: the position, breathing, hold, repetitions and when to stop. Move gently afterwards and avoid adding extra intensity simply because the area feels temporarily looser. Consistent, comfortable practice is easier to monitor than occasional forceful stretching.
When to seek assessment
Seek urgent care for sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe pain after trauma, a visibly deformed joint, or a limb that becomes cold or blue. Contact a clinician promptly for increasing swelling, fever, progressive tingling, or pain that keeps escalating. Stop stretching and request reassessment if symptoms travel farther down an arm or leg or function declines.
Questions to bring
Which movement is restricted? Is the limit from muscle, joint, nerve or swelling? How much sensation is acceptable? What home stretch matches today’s findings? How will we progress toward my daily or sporting goals?

Questions people ask
Can assisted stretching make a stiff joint move better?
It may improve movement when stiffness is part of the problem, but the result depends on the cause and should be supported by active exercises.
Should I stretch through nerve pain?
No. Electric, burning or spreading symptoms need feedback and reassessment rather than stronger stretching.
