What should you know about manual lymph drainage therapists?

A trained therapist assesses swelling, skin condition, movement, comfort, and how lymphoedema affects daily tasks. Manual lymph drainage uses light, rhythmic strokes directed toward working lymph pathways. It is not a deep massage and should be adapted around scars, tenderness, medical devices, and areas affected by cancer treatment.

Lymphoedema can follow surgery such as mastectomy, lymph-node treatment, radiotherapy, infection, or other damage to lymph drainage. The goal is usually to reduce heaviness and tightness, protect skin, improve movement, and help you manage swelling over time. Results and suitability differ between people.

Look for a clinician trained in lymphoedema assessment and complete decongestive care. Ask how they coordinate with your oncology or surgical team and whether they can teach self-massage, skin care, exercise, and safe use of a compression garment. Compression is often part of a broader plan rather than a replacement for assessment.

Before an appointment, note when swelling changes, what makes it worse, any skin breaks, and whether clothing or movement has become difficult. Do not begin vigorous massage over unexplained swelling without medical advice, particularly soon after surgery or during active cancer treatment.

Seek prompt medical advice for sudden swelling, redness, warmth, increasing pain, fever, or a wound that is leaking, because infection or a blood clot may need treatment. Remove a compression garment and contact your team if it causes numbness, colour change, severe pain, or breathing discomfort. New swelling after breast cancer treatment should be assessed rather than assumed to be lymphoedema.
