Mandelic Acid Peel: What to Know

Mandelic acid is an exfoliating alpha hydroxy acid. During a peel, it is applied for a planned contact time and then removed or neutralised according to the formulation. The aim may be to improve surface roughness, dullness, or uneven colour. Temporary warmth, tingling, redness, dryness, and flaking can occur. Results and reactions vary with concentration, contact time, skin condition, recent treatments, and the area treated. A peel cannot correct every cause of acne, pigmentation, or texture, and active irritation can make treatment less suitable.

Tell the practitioner about eczema, cold sores, recent sun exposure, shaving, retinoids, other acids, and medicines that affect your skin. Follow the preparation plan and do not increase exfoliation on your own. After treatment, use gentle cleansing, a bland moisturiser, and broad-spectrum sun protection; avoid picking flakes, hot water, friction, and unapproved actives until the barrier has recovered. Do not schedule another procedure simply because peeling has started. Written aftercare should explain what to apply, what to avoid, and who to contact if the reaction changes.

Contact the treating clinician for worsening pain, marked swelling, blistering, weeping, yellow crusting, or redness that spreads beyond the treated area. Seek urgent help for facial swelling with breathing or swallowing difficulty. New or persistent dark or pale patches also deserve review, particularly after inflammation.
