Management of intraductal papilloma

An intraductal papilloma is a small growth inside a milk duct. It may cause clear or bloody nipple discharge, a lump near the nipple or no symptoms at all. A papilloma is often benign, but the tissue around it can affect the recommended plan. Imaging can show an area that needs closer assessment, while a biopsy examines cells directly.

Your breast specialist may recommend monitoring when the findings are reassuring and symptoms are absent or mild. A biopsy may be advised when imaging is unclear, the lump is growing or discharge needs explanation. Removal of the papilloma can both treat a troublesome lump or discharge and provide a larger tissue sample for assessment. Discuss how the procedure may affect the duct, nipple sensation, scarring and future breast checks.

Book an assessment for new nipple discharge, a breast lump, nipple changes or skin dimpling. Seek prompt care if discharge is bloody or occurs without squeezing, or if a lump is enlarging. Urgent assessment is appropriate for marked redness, fever, rapidly increasing swelling or feeling very unwell.
