Fibroadenomas are made from glandular and supporting breast tissue. They often feel smooth, firm, and mobile beneath the skin, although examination alone cannot identify every lump. Ultrasound can assess its shape and internal appearance. A biopsy may be advised when imaging is unclear, the lump is changing, or the clinical examination and scan do not match. Hormonal changes can make a fibroadenoma grow or feel more noticeable.

Keep the imaging and examination appointments recommended for your lump. Note its location, tenderness, and any change in size or skin appearance without repeatedly pressing it. Some fibroadenomas can be monitored with follow-up examinations or imaging. Removal may be discussed when the lump grows, causes discomfort, affects daily life, or remains uncertain after assessment. A biopsy can provide tissue information before a decision is made.

Arrange prompt assessment for a new breast lump, a lump that becomes harder or fixed, rapid enlargement, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, or swollen nodes near the armpit. Seek urgent help for severe redness, warmth, swelling, and fever, which can indicate infection rather than a simple fibroadenoma.
