What should you know about mammary duct ectasia ultrasound?

Mammary duct ectasia means one or more ducts beneath the nipple have widened and their walls may have thickened. Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images without radiation. It may show an enlarged duct, fluid or thicker material inside it, and whether a nearby lump looks fluid-filled or solid. Nipple discharge, tenderness, nipple inversion, or redness can accompany the condition. An ultrasound appearance is interpreted alongside the examination and the discharge pattern.

Wear comfortable clothing and tell the imaging team about a tender area, nipple discharge, skin changes, pregnancy, or breastfeeding. The clinician may compare both breasts, examine the nipple and areola, or recommend another assessment if the images are not enough to explain the finding. Do not squeeze the nipple repeatedly, because this can encourage further discharge and irritation.

Arrange prompt review for bloody or clear discharge from one breast, a new fixed lump, nipple inversion that is new for you, persistent redness, warmth, fever, or increasing pain. Urgent care is appropriate when breast redness and swelling develop with fever or you feel acutely unwell, as infection may need treatment.

Ask whether the duct changes explain your symptoms, whether the discharge needs testing, if another scan is needed, what result would prompt follow-up, and how to manage discomfort safely.
