Mallet finger splint

Mallet finger, also called baseball finger or a drooping fingertip, occurs when the tendon that straightens the end joint is injured. Some injuries also involve a small bone fragment. The splint supports the end joint in a straight position while the tissues recover; it does not make the finger strong immediately. The middle joint should not be unnecessarily immobilised because stiffness can develop around the finger.

Wear the splint for the schedule prescribed by your clinician, including during sleep if instructed. Keep the fingertip supported whenever the splint is removed for cleaning. Do not let the end joint bend while changing or drying the splint. Check the skin for pressure marks, keep the splint clean and dry, and report a loose, cracked, or uncomfortable device. Arrange a review if the fingertip becomes newly bent, the splint no longer holds it straight, or pain and swelling increase. Seek prompt help for numbness, a cold or blue fingertip, broken skin, spreading redness, drainage, or fever. Do not reshape the splint yourself if it causes pressure; an adjustment may be needed.
