What should you know about malignant tertian malaria?

Malignant tertian malaria is an older name for severe illness caused by the Plasmodium falciparum parasite. Tertian refers to the fever pattern historically associated with some malaria infections, but fever does not always follow a predictable cycle. The parasite can affect red blood cells and reduce blood flow through small vessels, allowing complications involving the brain, kidneys, breathing or blood to develop. Fever, Chills and Muscle Aches are possible presentations, but they cannot confirm the cause.

Seek urgent medical assessment after travel or residence in a malaria-risk area if fever or an unexplained flu-like illness develops. Tell the clinician your travel dates, locations, mosquito exposure and any prevention medicine used. Use emergency services for confusion, seizure, severe weakness, fainting, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, inability to drink or reduced alertness.
