Male stomach compression garment: what to know

An abdominal compression garment is an elastic item worn around the stomach area. It can provide support after an operation, help manage swelling, or make movement feel more secure while tissues recover. It should feel supportive rather than sharply tight. The correct garment depends on the operation, wound position, body shape and the amount of compression advised by the clinical team.

Compression does not treat cancer itself. It is a supportive measure and may be used alongside lymphoedema therapy when swelling involves the abdominal wall or nearby areas. A garment should not cover an untreated wound unless the treating team specifically advises this.

Have the garment measured or checked by a trained clinician where possible. Put it on smoothly, without folds or rolled edges, and check that breathing and movement remain comfortable. Follow the advised wearing schedule and wash it as instructed. Inspect the skin when removing it, especially around the wound, waist and groin. Do not alter the garment or add extra layers to increase pressure. Ask for a refitting if it slips, pinches or leaves deep marks.

Remove the garment and contact your care team if you develop increasing pain, numbness, tingling, skin colour change, blisters, new wound leakage or difficulty breathing. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain or sudden abdominal swelling. These signs may mean the garment is unsuitable or that a separate medical problem needs assessment.

Ask what the garment is intended to support, when to start wearing it, how long to wear it each day, how to position it over dressings, and what pressure is appropriate. Ask who should check the fit and which skin or wound changes require a call.
