Short answer

Male postpartum depression can involve persistent low mood, irritability, withdrawal, anxiety, sleep or appetite changes, loss of interest and difficulty bonding after a baby arrives.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible signs
Irritability, withdrawal, anxiety, sleep change or loss of interest
Urgent concern
Thoughts of harm, confusion or inability to stay safe

Recognising the pattern

Depression after a birth may look less like sadness and more like anger, restlessness, emotional numbness, overworking, substance use or avoiding family life. A father or partner may feel overwhelmed, guilty, hopeless or unable to enjoy activities that once helped. Broken sleep and the demands of caring for a newborn can intensify symptoms, but ongoing changes that interfere with daily life deserve attention.

The symptoms may affect a non-birthing parent even when the baby is healthy and the birth went as expected. Low mood after birth and low sex drive can occur alongside depression, but neither symptom is required.

Getting support

Tell someone trusted what has changed and make a practical plan for rest, meals and time away from caregiving when possible. Contact a doctor or mental-health professional for an assessment; treatment may include talking therapy, medication or both, selected around your health and feeding or caregiving circumstances.

[Perinatal Mental Health Support](/treatments/medical-gynaecology/perinatal-mental-health-support/) can help families find appropriate care. A partner, relative or friend can help with the first call if speaking about symptoms feels difficult.

When to seek urgent help

Seek urgent help if there are thoughts of suicide, harming the baby or another person, or feeling unable to stay safe. Hearing or seeing things others do not, severe confusion, extreme agitation or several nights with almost no sleep also requires immediate assessment. Do not leave a person at immediate risk alone; contact local emergency services or go to an emergency department.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the symptoms fit depression, anxiety or another condition, what support is available for partners, how treatment may affect alertness and caregiving, and how the family can make a safety plan.
