Short answer

Male overactive bladder causes a sudden urge to urinate, frequent bathroom visits, night-time urination and sometimes urine leakage; assessment can identify contributing problems and guide treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

A bladder diary can show triggers and timing

What overactive bladder means

The bladder muscle may contract before it is ready to empty. You may feel urgency that is difficult to postpone, pass urine often, wake during the night, or leak before reaching a toilet. Infection, constipation, excess caffeine, medicines, prostate-related obstruction, diabetes or nerve conditions can produce similar symptoms, so the label is not a diagnosis by symptoms alone.

A clinician may ask about drinking habits, bowel movements, medicines, urine flow and whether the problem began suddenly. A urine test can look for infection or blood. If the pattern remains unclear, urodynamic testing can examine how the bladder stores and releases urine.

Steps that may help

Keep a short bladder diary showing drinks, toilet visits, urgency and leakage. Reduce caffeine and alcohol if they worsen urgency, avoid drinking large amounts close to bedtime, and treat constipation. Bladder training uses planned toilet visits with gradual spacing, while pelvic-floor exercises may improve control when taught correctly.

Do not stop prescribed medicines or sharply restrict fluids without clinical advice. A clinician can review prostate symptoms, infection risk and medicines before suggesting additional treatment. [Bladder Training](/treatments/pelvic-floor-and-rehabilitation/bladder-training/) and [Urodynamic Testing](/treatments/diagnostics-and-imaging/urodynamic-testing/) explain two parts of this process.

When to seek care

Arrange medical review for persistent urgency, repeated night waking, troublesome leakage or a change in urinary pattern. Seek prompt care for blood in the urine, fever with urinary symptoms, severe lower abdominal or back pain, inability to pass urine, or new weakness or numbness. Sudden confusion or feeling very unwell alongside urinary symptoms also needs urgent assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what other conditions could mimic overactive bladder, whether a urine test or bladder diary is useful, how prostate symptoms may affect treatment, and which exercises or medicines fit your health history.
