What type of disease is malaria?

Malaria is infectious because a parasite passes between a mosquito and a person; it is not caused by cold weather or ordinary tiredness. After entering the bloodstream, the parasite first develops in the liver and later multiplies inside red blood cells. This can produce cycles of fever, chills and sweating, along with headache, weakness or muscle aches. Different parasite species can cause different patterns and severity, so a clinician needs the travel history and test findings to guide treatment.

Record any recent travel, the dates of symptoms and medicines already taken. Seek prompt assessment if illness follows travel to a region where malaria occurs. Clinicians may use a blood test and may repeat testing when suspicion remains. Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes it. Before another trip, discuss malaria prophylaxis and mosquito-bite prevention.

Fever after travel can be an early malaria symptom and warrants same-day advice. Go to emergency care for confusion, reduced alertness, seizures, breathing problems, collapse, severe weakness or repeated vomiting. Do not wait for a typical fever pattern: malaria can present differently between people and can deteriorate without treatment.
