What should you know about malaria virus?

Short answer

Malaria is caused by parasites transmitted through infected mosquito bites, not by a virus, and it needs prompt assessment when symptoms follow travel.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Fever after malaria-risk travel warrants prompt assessment.

Understanding malaria

Malaria is an infection caused by parasites that enter the bloodstream after the bite of an infected mosquito. Calling it a virus is a common misunderstanding, but the distinction matters because diagnosis and treatment are specific to malaria parasites.

Illness can include fever, chills, muscle aches, headache, weakness, or stomach symptoms. Symptoms may develop while away or after returning home. A vaccine, when suitable and available for the traveller, is only one part of prevention and does not make a later fever irrelevant.

Reducing exposure

Before travel, review the itinerary with a travel clinician. Ask whether malaria prophylaxis is suitable and whether any vaccination option applies. Take preventive medicine exactly as directed when prescribed, including instructions about starting and continuing it.

At night and whenever mosquitoes are active, use repellent, cover skin, and sleep in a screened or netted place. These measures reduce bites and remain useful whether or not you receive a vaccine.

Recognising a possible infection

Arrange urgent medical assessment for fever after visiting a malaria-risk area, especially when chills, muscle aches, confusion, breathing trouble, fainting, or repeated vomiting are present. Tell the clinician about travel before the consultation ends.

A blood test can help investigate malaria. Do not delay care while trying to identify the mosquito or waiting for symptoms to become more typical; malaria can present in different ways.

What to ask

Ask which parts of your trip create exposure, how to take malaria prophylaxis, whether vaccination is relevant, and which symptoms require same-day care. Confirm where testing is available during the trip and after you return.
