Malaria sickness: symptoms and next steps

Malaria sickness can cause fever, chills, sweating, headache, muscle aches, and profound tiredness, so prompt medical review is needed after travel. Symptoms may begin during a trip or after returning, and taking preventive medicine does not make new fever safe to ignore.

Malaria is caused by parasites transmitted through infected mosquito bites. Illness may begin with general flu-like symptoms and can worsen, sometimes with confusion, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, or marked weakness. These symptoms are not specific to malaria, but travel to a malaria region makes the history clinically important.

Contact a clinician promptly if you develop fever during or after travel in a malaria region. Give the destination list, travel dates, mosquito exposure, and details of any prophylaxis. A blood test may be arranged, and further testing can depend on the timing and clinical assessment. Drink fluids if you can, rest, and follow medical instructions rather than using someone else’s antimalarial medicine.

Use urgent medical services for confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, seizures, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, or rapidly worsening fever. Do not wait for a travel appointment when these symptoms occur. Tell emergency staff that you have been in a malaria region, even if the trip was not recent.

Ask what testing is needed, when results should be reviewed, which symptoms mean you should return urgently, and whether household members or travel companions need advice. Confirm how to take any prescribed treatment and what follow-up is required.
