Malaria Pf positive treatment: what to know

Pf commonly refers to Plasmodium falciparum, a malaria parasite identified by a blood test. The result should be interpreted with your symptoms, travel history and the type of test used. Fever, chills and muscle aches can occur with malaria, but symptoms alone cannot identify the parasite species.

Treatment choice depends on the confirmed species, illness severity, where the infection was acquired, pregnancy status, age, other medicines and relevant medical conditions. Do not use leftover tablets or someone else’s prescription.

Contact a clinician urgently after a positive result and take the report with you. Start only the medicine prescribed for this episode, follow its timing and complete the course unless the prescriber changes it. Keep fluids down if you can, rest, and record fever, vomiting and each dose.

Tell the clinician about recent travel, pregnancy, allergies, kidney or liver problems, and every medicine or supplement you take. A repeat blood test may be used when the diagnosis or response needs checking. Malaria treatment is different from malaria prophylaxis, which is used to reduce risk before or during some travel.

Seek emergency care immediately for confusion, fainting, a seizure, trouble breathing, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, yellowing of the eyes, very little urine or rapidly worsening illness. A child, pregnant person or person with significant medical conditions needs especially prompt assessment.

Do not wait for a routine appointment if fever returns or symptoms intensify after treatment begins. Tell emergency staff that malaria was detected and where you travelled.

Ask which parasite was detected, whether the result needs confirmation, which treatment is prescribed, how to take it with food or other medicines, and what improvement should look like. Clarify whether follow-up blood tests are needed and what to do if you vomit a dose.
