What should you know about a malaria outbreak?

An outbreak refers to more malaria cases than expected in a particular place or period. It does not mean that every person in the area has malaria, and it does not establish the cause of an individual fever. Malaria is spread through infected mosquitoes, not by ordinary casual contact between people.

Fever is a common presentation of malaria; chills and muscle aches may accompany it. Anyone who develops these symptoms after staying in an affected area should share that location and timing with a healthcare professional.

Follow local public-health advice, prevent mosquito bites with repellent, covered clothing, screens, and bed nets where appropriate, and seek a travel health consultation before visiting an affected region. A clinician can assess whether malaria prophylaxis is suitable for the destination and for your health history.

If illness develops, arrange medical assessment promptly and ask whether a blood test is needed. Do not self-treat with leftover medicines or stop a prescribed course because symptoms improve.

Get urgent help for fever after possible exposure, particularly if you have confusion, severe drowsiness, trouble breathing, fainting, seizures, persistent vomiting, or marked weakness. Tell emergency staff about the outbreak area and the date of your last possible mosquito exposure.
