How does malaria affect the liver?

Following an infected mosquito bite, malaria parasites travel to liver cells. This early stage may cause few noticeable symptoms. After multiplication, parasites leave the liver and enter red blood cells, where illness commonly becomes more apparent with fever, chills, sweating, tiredness, or muscle aches. Certain malaria species can leave dormant forms in the liver that reactivate later, so the clinician needs to identify the likely species and travel exposure.

Seek medical assessment for fever during or after travel in a malaria area, and explain any previous malaria episode. A blood test helps investigate active infection, but treatment decisions also use symptoms, travel details, pregnancy status, and other health factors. Take the complete prescribed course and report new symptoms rather than adding medicines yourself. Travel advice before a future trip can cover prevention.

Go to emergency care for yellow eyes, confusion, seizures, breathing difficulty, fainting, severe drowsiness, persistent vomiting, or rapidly worsening fever. These signs need prompt evaluation because malaria can affect more than the liver once parasites enter the blood.

Ask whether your test can identify the parasite species, whether liver-stage treatment is needed, how follow-up will check for recurrence, and which changes in skin colour, urine, alertness, or fever require urgent review.
