What should you know about malaria endemic areas?

Malaria-endemic areas are places where local mosquito transmission occurs, so travel planning and fever awareness matter. Risk varies by location, season, accommodation, activities, and the malaria parasite present. Someone can become unwell during travel or after returning, so mention every recent destination when seeking medical advice for a fever.

Endemic does not mean that every visitor will get malaria, and it does not describe a single level of danger. It means malaria continues to occur in that region. Mosquito bites may transmit the infection, while symptoms can include fever, chills, headache, or muscle aches. Some infections begin after a delay, so the travel history remains relevant even when you feel ill at home.

Arrange a Travel Health Consultation well before departure. A clinician can review the itinerary, health conditions, medicines, pregnancy plans, and suitable Malaria Prophylaxis.
