What should you know about Mako unicompartmental knee replacement?

The knee has compartments, and osteoarthritis may be concentrated in one of them. In a unicompartmental replacement, the surgeon removes and resurfaces the damaged area while retaining suitable bone, cartilage and ligaments elsewhere. Imaging creates a surgical plan; the system helps guide preparation and implant position, but the surgeon remains responsible for every decision.

This option is considered only when the pattern of damage, ligament function, alignment, activity needs and general health fit the procedure. If disease affects several compartments or the knee is unstable, a total replacement may be discussed instead.

Ask how many compartments are involved and whether your ligaments support a partial replacement. Discuss the proposed cobalt-chrome and polyethylene components, fixation, medication changes and rehabilitation. Arrange help for the first days, remove trip hazards and use the prescribed exercises to restore knee movement and strength. Progress walking and higher-demand activities only as your team advises.

After surgery, report increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, calf swelling or a sudden change in walking. Seek emergency help for chest pain, severe breathlessness or fainting. A fall, locking knee or inability to bear weight should be assessed rather than tested repeatedly at home.
