What should you know about making magnesium sulphate?

Magnesium sulphate is a medicine supplied as a sterile solution or concentrate that may be diluted according to the prescribed instructions. In maternity care it can be used to help prevent or treat seizures associated with severe pre-eclampsia or eclampsia, and in selected situations to protect a baby when very early birth is expected. It is not a home remedy or a supplement to mix yourself.

Take it only when prescribed and let the team know about kidney problems, breathing conditions, muscle weakness and all medicines or supplements you use. During treatment, clinicians may check breathing, reflexes, urine output, blood pressure and how alert you feel. Tell them promptly about flushing, nausea, blurred vision, marked drowsiness, weakness or difficulty breathing. Do not change the amount, concentration or timing yourself. Antenatal Care Package appointments can help monitor pregnancy concerns, but they do not replace urgent assessment.

Get urgent help for a severe headache, visual changes, pain beneath the ribs, sudden swelling, confusion, a seizure, chest tightness or difficulty breathing during pregnancy or after birth. If magnesium sulphate is being given and breathing becomes slow or you are unusually difficult to wake, alert staff immediately. These symptoms need assessment for the underlying pregnancy emergency or a medicine reaction.

Ask why magnesium sulphate is recommended, how it will be prepared and given, what monitoring you will receive, how long treatment is expected to continue, and which symptoms require immediate help.
