Makeup for dark underarms: what to know

Underarm colour may deepen after shaving, friction, deodorant irritation, or inflammation. It can also follow a rash such as Intertrigo or represent Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation after the skin has healed. Makeup changes the visible colour but does not identify or treat the cause. Broken, moist, itchy, or tender skin needs care before cosmetic coverage.

Wash gently, pat the folds completely dry, and apply a bland moisturiser if the skin is dry. Once the area is calm, choose fragrance-free, transfer-resistant body makeup and patch-test it first. Use a thin layer, allow it to set, and avoid applying it immediately after shaving or onto a rash. Remove it with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser; do not scrub. A clinician may discuss Chemical Peel, Laser Hair Removal, Laser Toning, or Hydroquinone Treatment when appropriate.

Seek medical advice for rapidly spreading colour change, persistent itch, burning, odour, oozing, cracks, pain, or a rash that does not settle. Also arrange an assessment if the skin becomes thick or velvety, or if pigmentation appears in other folds. Diagnosis matters because covering an active infection or inflammation can delay suitable treatment.
