How to make hiccups go away

Short answer
To make hiccups go away, try slow breathing, small sips of water, and avoiding food or drink triggers while monitoring how long they last.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Fast eating, fizzy drinks, alcohol, large meals, and sudden temperature changes

- Slow breathing, small sips of water, and sitting upright
What hiccups mean
A hiccup is a sudden contraction of the diaphragm followed by closure of the vocal cords, which creates the familiar sound. Eating quickly, overeating, fizzy drinks, alcohol, sudden temperature changes, laughter, or emotional stress can trigger short-lived episodes. Reflux or irritation in the stomach may also contribute; see Acid Reflux or Gastritis for related symptoms.
What you can do
Sit upright and breathe slowly through your nose, allowing each breath to be gentle and unhurried. Take small sips of cool water and pause between them. Stop eating for a short while, then choose smaller bites and eat slowly. Avoid carbonated drinks, alcohol, and very large meals until the episode settles. Do not use frightening, forceful, or choking-based tricks, and do not swallow objects or substances. A clinician can advise whether Acid Reflux Medication is appropriate when reflux symptoms accompany recurrent hiccups.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice if hiccups persist, keep returning, disturb sleep, or make eating, drinking, breathing, or speaking difficult. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, fainting, new weakness, or a severe headache. Persistent hiccups can sometimes reflect an underlying illness or a medicine effect, so note when they began and what happened beforehand.
Questions for your doctor
Could reflux, stomach irritation, or a medicine be contributing? What symptoms would make this urgent? Which treatment is suitable if hiccups continue? Should I keep a record of meals, drinks, and episodes?
