What Should You Know About Mainland Hand Therapy?

Short answer
Mainland hand therapy is a tailored rehabilitation programme that helps restore hand and wrist movement, strength, coordination, and practical function.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- May help with
- Movement, strength, coordination, swelling, and daily hand function
- May include
- Exercises, splinting, scar care, symptom management, and task practice
- Useful for
- Recovery after injury or surgery and management of hand conditions
What is mainland hand therapy?
A qualified therapist assesses how your fingers, thumb, wrist, nerves, joints, tendons, and muscles work together. The plan may support recovery after an injury or operation, or help you manage stiffness, pain, swelling, weakness, or reduced dexterity caused by an ongoing condition.
What treatment may involve
Sessions can include guided movement, strengthening, tendon or nerve-gliding exercises, joint-protection advice, scar care, swelling management, and practice of tasks such as writing, dressing, gripping, or using tools. A therapist may make or recommend a splint to protect healing tissue, improve alignment, or allow a safer range of movement.
Hand therapy is often adjusted as your examination changes. The home programme matters because short, regular practice can help maintain gains between appointments; exercises should follow the instructions given for your specific injury or condition.
How to prepare and take part
Bring details of your symptoms, previous treatment, medicines, work or hobby demands, and any difficulty with daily tasks. Wear clothing that leaves the forearm and wrist easy to examine. During treatment, describe whether an exercise causes pulling, pressure, sharp pain, tingling, or increasing swelling so the therapist can modify it.
Follow splint and exercise instructions carefully, and keep scheduled reviews when healing needs monitoring. Do not add forceful gripping or stretching on your own after a fracture, tendon repair, or operation unless your treating team has cleared it.
When to seek medical care
Arrange an assessment if hand or wrist pain, stiffness, weakness, numbness, or loss of function is interfering with work, sleep, or ordinary activities. Prompt medical review is needed after a significant injury, a visible deformity, or sudden inability to move a finger or wrist.
Seek urgent help for a hand that becomes pale, blue, unusually cold, rapidly more swollen, or severely painful, or for new weakness or numbness after an injury. After treatment, contact your care team if a wound becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, draining, or associated with fever.
Questions to ask your doctor or therapist
Ask which structures are limiting your function, what activities are safe at this stage, how often to practise, and which symptoms mean you should stop an exercise. You can also ask whether a splint is appropriate, how progress will be assessed, and when you can return to driving, work, sport, or household tasks.
