What should you know about magnetron linear accelerator?

A linear accelerator uses radio-frequency energy to accelerate electrons. The electrons can produce high-energy x-rays, or they may be used directly in selected treatments. The magnetron supplies the radio-frequency energy that helps this process; it is part of the machine, not something placed inside the patient.

Treatment staff use imaging, computer planning, and carefully shaped fields to direct radiation toward the intended area while limiting exposure to nearby tissue. The equipment may be used for conventional radiotherapy and, when suitable, more focused approaches such as stereotactic body radiotherapy.

Before treatment, you may have an appointment for scanning and positioning so the team can map the area and create a plan. Small marks or an immobilisation device may help you return to the same position. During each session, the machine moves around you while you remain still; the treatment itself is not felt, although the room may contain monitoring equipment.

Keep the treatment team informed about new symptoms, skin changes, medicines, pregnancy, or difficulty maintaining the required position. Ask which visits are for planning and which are treatment sessions, because the schedule depends on the treatment plan.

Contact the oncology team promptly for severe or rapidly worsening pain, significant skin blistering in the treatment area, repeated vomiting, new breathing difficulty, or inability to drink. Seek emergency help for sudden weakness, a seizure, severe confusion, or trouble breathing.
