What should you know about magnesium sulphate salt?

The word salt describes the chemical form, not table salt for cooking. Magnesium sulphate may be supplied as crystals, powder, or a prepared medical solution. These products are not interchangeable. A product intended for a bath or skin use should not be swallowed or injected, and a clinical preparation should only be given by a trained professional.

In maternity care, magnesium sulphate can be used in hospital settings for specific pregnancy-related concerns. The dose, monitoring, and route are chosen by the clinical team. Its effects and possible harms depend on how much enters the body and on kidney function.

Read the product label and follow the directions provided for that exact preparation. Keep it dry and stored away from children. Do not mix it with medicines, supplements, bath products, or food unless a clinician or pharmacist has told you to do so.

Tell the clinician about pregnancy, kidney problems, heart or breathing conditions, and every medicine or supplement you take. Seek urgent medical help after a suspected overdose or accidental swallowing, or if use is followed by marked weakness, confusion, severe drowsiness, trouble breathing, fainting, or a very slow heartbeat. During pregnancy, urgent assessment is also needed for severe headache, visual changes, severe upper-abdominal pain, seizures, heavy bleeding, or reduced fetal movement.
