The medicine contains magnesium in a form that can be given by injection or infusion. In maternity care, it may be used for seizure prevention or treatment in specific serious complications. In other situations, clinicians may use magnesium sulphate when a measured magnesium deficiency needs correction or when its effects on body systems are useful.

The right amount and route depend on kidney function, symptoms, examination findings, and laboratory results. Medical magnesium sulphate is not interchangeable with a bath product or an over-the-counter supplement. A clinician decides whether it is appropriate and checks for effects during treatment.

Give the care team a complete list of medicines and mention kidney disease, heart rhythm problems, breathing difficulty, or previous reactions. During treatment, staff may check blood pressure, breathing, reflexes, urine output, and blood tests. Warmth, flushing, nausea, or sleepiness can happen; tell staff promptly if these feel severe or change suddenly.

Do not change a prescribed course or add a magnesium supplement without advice. Ask for written information about the reason for treatment and the follow-up plan before leaving care.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, extreme weakness, fainting, confusion, a seizure, or a serious allergic reaction with swelling of the face or throat. If symptoms begin during an infusion, alert staff immediately so they can assess you without delay.
