What should you know about magnesium sulphate in hypertension?

High blood pressure in pregnancy can occur with signs that affect the brain and other organs. Magnesium sulphate calms nerve activity and may lower the risk of seizures in a person judged to be at risk. Separate medicines may be needed to bring blood pressure down, and the care team may also discuss timing of birth.

Treatment decisions depend on gestational age, symptoms, blood-pressure readings, examination findings, and blood or urine tests. A normal feeling does not always exclude a serious problem, which is why scheduled checks matter.

Attend every blood-pressure review and take prescribed medicines exactly as directed. Tell your maternity team about severe headache, flashing lights or blurred vision, pain beneath the ribs, sudden swelling, shortness of breath, or reduced fetal movement. Do not start magnesium supplements as a substitute for prescribed care.

If magnesium sulphate is recommended, ask how it will be given and which observations will be checked. Warmth, flushing, nausea, and drowsiness can occur; report worsening symptoms rather than trying to manage them alone.

Seek urgent maternity assessment for a severe or persistent headache, vision changes, severe upper-abdominal pain, breathing difficulty, confusion, a seizure, or markedly reduced fetal movement. These symptoms need assessment because urgency is determined by the warning sign, not by whether magnesium sulphate has already been discussed.
