What should you know about magnesium sulphate in agriculture?

Plants need magnesium to support chlorophyll formation and sulphur for several growth processes. Agricultural magnesium sulphate may be added to soil or dissolved for a crop application when a grower has a reason to suspect a nutrient shortage. The correct product, dilution, timing, and application method depend on the crop, soil, weather, and local instructions. A yellowing leaf does not prove that magnesium is missing; pests, disease, drainage, or other nutrient problems can look similar.

A garden or farm product is not automatically manufactured, tested, packaged, or labelled for people. It should not be swallowed, injected, added to food, or used as a substitute for prescribed magnesium sulphate in maternity care. Keep the original label available so a clinician can identify an accidental exposure.

Follow the agricultural label and use suitable gloves, eye protection, and ventilation when the instructions call for them. Store the product in its original container away from medicines, food, children, and animals. Do not mix it with another product unless the label or a qualified agricultural professional says the combination is compatible. Wash exposed skin after handling and follow local disposal guidance.

Contact a poison service or seek urgent medical care after swallowing an agricultural product, getting it in the eyes, breathing irritating dust, or developing vomiting, severe weakness, confusion, faintness, or breathing difficulty. Rinse exposed eyes or skin with clean running water while arranging advice, and take the container or label with you. In pregnancy, do not self-treat with an agricultural product; contact your maternity team for product-specific advice.
