What should you know about magnesium sulphate heptahydrate?

Heptahydrate describes the chemical form, not a separate diagnosis or a single treatment. The same active substance may appear in a sterile injectable product, a topical preparation, or another formulation, but these products are not automatically interchangeable. The label, concentration, sterility, and intended route determine how it can be used.

In maternity care, clinicians may use a suitable magnesium sulphate preparation for seizure prevention or fetal neuroprotection in selected situations. Those uses require trained staff and observation. A product intended for external use must not be injected, swallowed, or substituted for a prescribed hospital preparation.

Read the full label and confirm the route with a pharmacist or clinician, especially if the name appears on a prescription, sachet, bottle, or compounded preparation. Mention kidney disease, breathing problems, neuromuscular disorders, pregnancy, allergies, and all medicines. Never measure or dilute an injectable product at home. During supervised treatment, report flushing, nausea, unusual sleepiness, weakness, dizziness, or breathing changes.

Get urgent help after accidental swallowing, injection, or exposure to the eyes, or if you develop difficulty breathing, faintness, severe weakness, confusion, or a severe allergic reaction. In pregnancy, severe headache, vision changes, upper abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, seizures, or reduced fetal movement also need immediate maternity assessment.
