What should you know about magnesium sulphate for pre eclampsia?

Pre eclampsia can affect blood pressure and organs such as the liver, kidneys, and brain. Magnesium sulphate calms excessive nerve activity and is used when clinicians judge that seizure prevention or seizure treatment is needed. It does not lower blood pressure by itself and does not remove the underlying pregnancy complication. Other medicines, blood tests, fetal checks, and decisions about timing of birth may be part of the same plan.

A loading dose may be followed by an infusion. Nurses and doctors check breathing, reflexes, alertness, urine output, and symptoms during treatment. Flushing, warmth, nausea, headache, or sleepiness may happen. Reduced urine output matters because the kidneys clear magnesium from the body.

Tell the team about kidney disease, breathing problems, neuromuscular conditions, allergies, and every medicine or supplement you use. Remain under observation and use the call bell if you feel unusually weak, very sleepy, dizzy, or short of breath. Keep taking blood-pressure medicine only as directed. The team will explain whether treatment continues after birth and how your baby will be monitored.

Contact maternity services urgently for a severe or persistent headache, flashing lights or blurred vision, severe pain beneath the ribs, sudden swelling with feeling unwell, vomiting, heavy bleeding, a seizure, or reduced fetal movement. During treatment, difficulty breathing, faintness, profound weakness, or worsening drowsiness requires immediate attention from staff. Do not drive yourself if you are experiencing severe symptoms.

Ask why magnesium sulphate is recommended, how long it will run, how blood pressure and urine output will be checked, which symptoms indicate toxicity, and how the plan changes around labour or birth.
