What should you know about magnesium sulphate and Epsom salt?

The name Epsom salt refers to magnesium sulphate. Products can differ in intended use, formulation, purity and instructions. A bath product is designed for external use and should not be assumed to replace a prescribed magnesium medicine, treat constipation or manage blood pressure. Evidence for soaking to correct low magnesium or relieve a medical condition is limited, and skin contact can still cause irritation in some people.

Read the package directions and keep the product away from children. Avoid swallowing bath salts or putting them on broken skin. Stop using them if burning, rash or worsening irritation develops. If you are pregnant, have kidney disease, or take medicines affecting magnesium, ask a clinician before using Epsom salt for anything beyond routine bathing. Never use it to delay assessment of serious symptoms.

Seek urgent help after swallowing Epsom salt if you develop repeated vomiting, marked weakness, confusion, slow or difficult breathing, fainting or an abnormal heartbeat. During pregnancy, urgent assessment is needed for severe headache, vision changes, seizure, chest pain, severe abdominal pain or reduced fetal movement. Take the product packaging with you if possible.
