What should you know about magnesium and kidney stones?

Magnesium may influence urine chemistry, but it should not be used as a stand-alone cure for kidney stones without clinical advice. The value of a supplement depends on stone type, kidney function, diet, medicines, and the reason magnesium is being considered.

Kidney stones form when minerals crystallise in concentrated urine. Magnesium can bind some substances in urine and may be relevant to selected stone patterns, but this does not dissolve an obstructing stone or replace medical assessment. Some magnesium products can cause diarrhoea, and excess magnesium can be dangerous when kidney function is reduced.

Flank pain, abdominal pain, painful urination, blood in urine, nausea, or difficulty passing urine may occur with a stone. These symptoms can also have other causes, so testing may be needed.

Ask a clinician before starting magnesium, especially if you have kidney disease or take regular medicines. Maintain the fluid intake advised for you; dehydration can make urine more concentrated. Do not force fluids if you are vomiting, have heart or kidney problems, or may have an obstruction. A clinician may review a passed stone, urine testing, blood tests, and imaging such as an abdominal ultrasound.

Get urgent help for severe or escalating pain, fever or chills with urinary symptoms, repeated vomiting, a swollen or very unwell feeling, or inability to pass urine. Infection behind a blockage can become serious and needs prompt treatment.
