What should you know about a MacroView Welch Allyn otoscope?

The instrument has a handle, light source, viewing optics and an ear speculum. A clinician uses it to inspect the canal for wax, redness, swelling, fluid, discharge or an object, then examines the eardrum for visible changes. The magnified view can make landmarks easier to assess, although wax, movement or a narrow canal may still limit what can be seen.

An otoscope finding is one part of a clinical assessment. Ear symptoms can arise from the outer ear, middle ear, pressure changes, wax or nearby structures. The examiner combines the view with pain, hearing, fever, recent illness and other relevant history.

Bring a list of symptoms and note when pain, blockage, discharge or hearing change began. During the examination, remain still and report sharp pain or dizziness. A child may benefit from sitting with a trusted adult and seeing the instrument before it is used.

Avoid putting objects into the canal. Do not use ear drops when a clinician has told you that the eardrum may be perforated unless they recommend a specific product. If wax prevents examination, ask about a safe plan rather than attempting deep removal at home.

Get prompt care for sudden hearing loss, severe or escalating pain, significant discharge or bleeding, fever with marked illness, swelling behind the ear, or facial weakness. A foreign body, chemical exposure or injury to the ear also needs timely assessment.
