Ringworm is not caused by a worm. It is a contagious fungal infection that can produce an expanding, ring-shaped rash with a clearer centre, itch, redness, or scaling. It may spread through close skin contact, shared towels, clothing, sports equipment, or infected pets. A rash can resemble other skin problems, so appearance alone does not always confirm the diagnosis.

For a small area on the body, a topical antifungal treatment may be appropriate when used exactly as directed. Persistent, widespread, scalp, beard, or nail involvement may need an assessment for a different approach.

Keep the affected skin clean and dry, wash hands after applying medicine, and avoid sharing towels, razors, clothing, or bedding. Wash clothing and towels regularly, and consider whether a household pet has a suspicious bald or scaly patch. Do not use steroid cream on an undiagnosed ring-shaped rash unless a clinician advises it, because steroids can mask or worsen a fungal infection.

A clinician may recommend topical antifungal treatment for limited skin disease or oral antifungal treatment when infection involves hair-bearing areas, nails, or a larger surface. Follow the full plan even if itching settles early, and arrange review if the rash continues to expand or returns.

Seek medical advice promptly for scalp involvement, painful swelling, pus, fever, rapidly spreading redness, extensive disease, or infection in someone with reduced immunity. Arrange an examination if the diagnosis is uncertain or there is no clear improvement after using an appropriate antifungal as directed. Urgent care is needed for severe facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a serious reaction after medicine.
