What should you know about Maalox and nausea?

Maalox is an antacid product used to neutralise stomach acid and relieve symptoms such as heartburn or an upset, acidic stomach. Nausea may occur with acid reflux, gastritis, food poisoning, gastroenteritis, gallstones, heat exhaustion, hepatitis A, or low blood sugar, so the underlying cause matters.

If nausea starts after a meal and comes with burning behind the breastbone, sour fluid, or upper-abdominal discomfort, an acid-related problem may be contributing. Maalox will not clear an infection, replace lost fluids, or correct a blood-sugar problem.

Follow the product label and do not take more than directed. Check with a pharmacist or clinician before using it if you have kidney disease, take regular medicines, or need treatment for a child. Antacids can affect how some medicines are absorbed, so spacing may be advised.

Take small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if vomiting or diarrhoea is present. Choose light foods when able, avoid alcohol and foods that clearly trigger symptoms, and keep a note of when nausea began, what you ate, and any accompanying pain or fever.

Seek urgent help for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, vomit containing blood, black stools, fainting, confusion, chest pain, or trouble breathing. Prompt assessment is also needed if you cannot keep fluids down or show signs of dehydration such as very little urine and marked dizziness.
