What should you know about M1 M2 macrophage flow cytometry?

Short answer
M1 M2 macrophage flow cytometry measures selected cell markers to describe macrophage characteristics in a sample.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Method
- Cells are analysed individually as they pass through a laser.
- Meaning
- Marker patterns need clinical context.
What the test examines
Macrophages are immune cells that can change their activity in response to signals around them. M1 and M2 are useful shorthand for patterns of activation, but real cells may show mixed or changing features rather than fitting one box. Flow cytometry passes individual cells through a laser and records light signals from attached antibodies or other markers. A panel may help identify macrophages and assess several markers at once. The result describes the cells present in that particular sample; it does not by itself diagnose cancer or prove that one macrophage state caused a disease.
How to prepare and understand results
Ask which sample was tested, which markers were included and what comparison group the laboratory used. The sample could come from blood, tissue or bone marrow, depending on the clinical question. Preparation varies, so follow the laboratory instructions about medicines, food or appointments. Your clinician interprets the pattern alongside symptoms, imaging, pathology and other laboratory findings. A result may be limited if the sample contains too few cells, has degraded, or does not represent the whole affected area.
When to seek care
Flow cytometry itself is usually a laboratory analysis, so urgent symptoms generally relate to the procedure used to obtain the sample or to the illness being investigated. Seek prompt help for heavy bleeding, increasing redness, swelling, pus, fever, fainting or severe pain after a biopsy or blood draw. Contact your clinical team if a result is unclear or you do not understand what action it changes; a marker pattern needs clinical context rather than self-interpretation.
Questions for your doctor
What was the clinical question? Which markers define the macrophage population? Does the pattern show a mixture of features? How will this result be combined with pathology or imaging, and is another sample needed?
Questions people ask
Does M1 or M2 prove that a tumour is present?
No. The labels describe marker patterns in immune cells and cannot independently establish a cancer diagnosis.
What sample can be tested?
Depending on the question, laboratories may analyse blood, tissue or bone marrow.
