What should you know about lymphocyte phenotyping flow cytometry?

Short answer
Lymphocyte phenotyping flow cytometry identifies different lymphocyte groups by detecting markers on individual cells in a blood or marrow sample.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Sample
- Often blood, but tissue or marrow may also be tested.
- Detects
- Cell groups and marker patterns on individual lymphocytes.
- Meaning
- Needs interpretation alongside symptoms and other findings.
What the test examines
Lymphocytes include B cells, T cells, and natural killer cells. Flow cytometry passes prepared cells through a laser and records signals from tagged antibodies attached to cell markers. The pattern helps a laboratory describe which cell groups are present, their relative distribution, and whether a population has an unusual marker pattern.
The test may be used when blood counts, symptoms, or other findings raise questions about immune-cell changes or a blood-related cancer. A result is not interpreted alone. Age, medicines, infection, recent treatment, the sample type, and the quality of the specimen can all affect its meaning.
Preparing and understanding results
Ask whether the sample will be blood, lymph-node tissue, or marrow, and whether any preparation is needed. Most people do not feel the laboratory analysis itself; discomfort depends on how the sample was collected. Your clinician will compare the report with the blood count, examination, imaging, and sometimes a [Bone Marrow Biopsy](/treatments/diagnostics-and-staging/bone-marrow-biopsy/).
Reports may list marker names and cell groups rather than a simple yes-or-no answer. Ask which finding matters, whether the sample was adequate, and whether repeat testing or another type of assessment is needed. Do not change medicines based on the report without clinical advice.
When to seek care
The test itself does not usually create an emergency. Seek prompt medical help for fever with shaking chills, severe breathlessness, confusion, unusual bleeding, or rapidly worsening weakness, especially if your immune system is affected. Report increasing redness, swelling, or pain at a sampling site.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Why was this test chosen? Which lymphocyte populations were measured? Were any abnormal markers detected? How does the result fit with my blood count and other tests? When will the next step be decided?
Questions people ask
Does an abnormal flow-cytometry result prove cancer?
No. It can identify an unusual cell pattern, but diagnosis requires clinical context and may need additional testing.
How long does the test take?
Collection time depends on the sample, while laboratory processing and review vary by test complexity.
