Luxamed otoscope: what should you know?

An otoscope combines illumination with a viewing lens so a clinician can examine the ear canal and eardrum. The instrument may help reveal wax, irritation, discharge, a foreign object, or changes behind the eardrum. It does not diagnose every cause of ear pain or hearing change by itself; symptoms and the rest of the examination still matter.

Tell the clinician about pain, reduced hearing, ringing, dizziness, discharge, fever, recent swimming, injury, or objects placed in the ear. Remain still while the ear is examined. Do not insert cotton buds, drops, or other objects unless advised, particularly if a perforated eardrum is possible. Children may need a calm child health consultation.

Arrange prompt assessment for severe ear pain, sudden hearing loss, blood or pus, a suspected foreign object, swelling behind the ear, or fever with a child who seems very unwell. Seek urgent help for severe dizziness, facial weakness, or an injury involving the ear.

Ask what the examination showed, whether wax or infection is present, whether hearing should be checked, and which symptoms should prompt follow-up. If the examination was difficult, ask whether another review is needed.
