What should you know about lung nodule symptoms?

A lung nodule is a small, rounded area seen inside the lung on an image. It may be a scar, a sign of a past infection, an active inflammatory change, or a tumour. Many nodules are found during a scan performed for another reason. When symptoms occur, they can include a cough, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, or blood-streaked phlegm, but these symptoms have many possible causes and do not identify the nodule by themselves.

The radiology report may describe the nodule's size, edge, location, density, and whether it has changed compared with older images. These details guide the next step; a scan appearance alone cannot confirm cancer.

Arrange a clinical review of the report and any earlier chest images. Your clinician may recommend a dedicated CT Scan to examine the nodule more closely, repeat imaging after an interval, or another assessment based on its appearance and your health history. Do not stop prescribed medicines or assume that a nodule needs immediate treatment.

Bring details about smoking or smoke exposure, previous infections, cancer history, occupational exposures, and new respiratory symptoms.
