What should you know about lung cancer that has spread to the bones?

Cancer cells that travel from the lung to bone can weaken the affected area and cause persistent or worsening pain, tenderness, reduced movement, or a fracture after a minor injury. Some people have no bone symptoms and learn about the change through imaging. Bone involvement can also alter calcium levels, which may contribute to thirst, constipation, nausea, confusion, or unusual sleepiness. The care team uses scans, blood tests, symptoms, and the overall cancer picture to plan care.

Tell the oncology team about new pain, difficulty walking, a change in posture, or reduced ability to manage daily tasks. Treatment may include systemic therapy such as chemotherapy, medicines that protect bone, radiotherapy for a painful or vulnerable area, surgery to stabilize a bone, and physical or occupational therapy. Ask about dental checks before some bone-strengthening medicines, because jaw problems need prevention and early attention. Palliative care can support pain, sleep, appetite, movement, and emotional wellbeing alongside cancer treatment.

Seek emergency care for sudden severe back or neck pain, new leg weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, inability to stand, or a suspected fracture. These signs can indicate spinal cord pressure or an unstable bone. Urgent assessment is also needed for confusion, marked drowsiness, repeated vomiting, or severe thirst with weakness, which can occur when calcium becomes too high.
