Lung cancer pain in ribs: what to know

Pain may feel aching, sharp, burning, or tender when you breathe, cough, or move. It can arise when disease affects the chest wall, lining around the lung, ribs, or nearby nerves. Muscle strain, infection, inflammation, and treatment effects can cause similar sensations. The location and pattern do not identify the cause by themselves.

A clinician may ask when the pain began, whether it travels, what worsens it, and whether breathlessness, cough, fever, or a skin change is present. Examination and imaging may help separate chest-wall pain from pain deeper in the chest.

Contact the oncology team about persistent, worsening, or sleep-disrupting pain. Keep a simple record of its location, severity, triggers, and relief. Use prescribed pain medicines exactly as directed, and tell the team if they cause drowsiness, constipation, nausea, or confusion. Do not heat, massage, or exercise a very tender area until a clinician has advised that this is appropriate.
