What should you know about lung cancer and stomach pain?

Short answer
Stomach pain has many possible causes, and by itself does not show that someone has lung cancer.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Key point
- Stomach pain is common and non-specific.
- Useful details
- Location, timing, triggers and associated symptoms matter.
How to interpret the symptom
Pain may come from the stomach, bowel, gallbladder, muscles or medication. Acid reflux, gastritis, food poisoning and gastroenteritis can cause upper abdominal discomfort, nausea or altered bowel movements. Coeliac disease, Crohn's disease and diverticular disease can also produce abdominal symptoms. Gallstones may cause stronger pain under the ribs, especially after meals.
Lung cancer can cause symptoms in the chest and airways, but stomach pain is not specific to it. If a person already has a cancer diagnosis, new pain can have several explanations, including treatment effects or a separate digestive problem. The location, timing, severity, associated symptoms and medical history guide the assessment.
What to do next
Book a clinical appointment for pain that persists, returns, disrupts sleep, or occurs with weight loss, reduced appetite, vomiting, a lasting change in bowel habit or breathing symptoms. Note where the pain sits, whether food or movement changes it, and any medicines or supplements you take. Do not stop prescribed cancer treatment without speaking with the treating team. A clinician may examine you and choose tests based on the pattern rather than the cancer concern alone.
When to seek urgent help
Get urgent medical help for sudden severe abdominal pain, a rigid or swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, black or bloody stools, fainting, yellow skin, or chest pain with breathlessness. Prompt assessment is also needed when pain is worsening quickly or you cannot keep fluids down.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what causes best match the pain pattern, whether medicines could contribute, which warning signs to monitor, and whether your respiratory symptoms need a separate review.

Questions people ask
Does stomach pain mean lung cancer has spread?
No. Pain alone cannot establish the cause or show spread; it needs assessment in context.
What should I write down before an appointment?
Record timing, location, severity, food or movement triggers, bowel symptoms, vomiting and current medicines.
