Lung cancer and bone cancer: what is the difference?

A tumour that begins in the lung and later reaches a bone is metastatic lung cancer. A tumour that begins in bone is primary bone cancer. They are not interchangeable diagnoses, even when pain or a scan finding involves the same area. Bone involvement may cause persistent pain, tenderness, reduced movement, or a fracture, but these symptoms also have non-cancer causes. Doctors use your history, examination, imaging, and sometimes a biopsy to identify the origin. The result affects which medicines, local treatments, and supportive measures are considered.

Tell your oncology or primary-care team about new or worsening bone pain, night pain, weakness, reduced mobility, or a fall. Bring details about the location, timing, and effect on movement. Do not start supplements or pain medicines without checking for interactions and kidney or stomach concerns. Assessment may include imaging and blood tests, followed by specialist review. Depending on the diagnosis and location, care may involve Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, or Tumour Removal Surgery. A plan may also include pain relief and protection of a weakened bone.

Seek urgent help after a sudden loss of strength, inability to bear weight, severe new back pain, or a suspected fracture. Back pain with new numbness, leg weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control is an emergency because pressure on the spinal cord can threaten movement and sensation. Sudden confusion or severe illness also needs immediate assessment. A stable ache still deserves timely review if it persists or interferes with sleep or activity.

Ask: Does the finding look like spread from the lung, a primary bone tumour, or another cause? Which scan or biopsy is needed? Is the bone stable? What can reduce pain and protect movement? Would Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, or Tumour Removal Surgery be appropriate, and who will coordinate my care?
