Lung adenocarcinoma immunohistochemistry: what it shows

A pathologist applies antibodies to cells from a biopsy. When a target protein is present, the stain creates a visible pattern. A panel of stains can help distinguish adenocarcinoma from other lung tumours and from cancer that has spread to the lung from another organ. The report may describe markers that support a lung origin, while also noting findings that make another origin less likely. Staining is interpreted alongside the microscope appearance, scan findings, and clinical history; one marker alone does not settle every diagnosis.

Ask whether the sample was sufficient for both diagnosis and predictive tests. Your team may recommend molecular analysis of the tumour because certain alterations can affect treatment choices. Ask which results are available, which are pending, and whether more tissue is needed. A biopsy is the tissue procedure that supplies the material for these laboratory assessments; its risks and recovery depend on where the sample is taken.

Contact your cancer team promptly for new or worsening breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, confusion, or a fever after a biopsy. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or heavy bleeding. These symptoms need assessment regardless of what the stain report says.
