Lumps Under the Skin on Feet: What to Know

A firm area on the sole may reflect thickened skin or tissue repeatedly exposed to pressure. A softer, mobile bump may be a cyst or another benign growth. A tender, warm, red lump can occur with inflammation or an infection such as a boil. A new or changing growth should be examined rather than judged by appearance alone; a lump is a presentation of a condition, not proof of a particular diagnosis.

Avoid squeezing, cutting, or repeatedly pressing the lump. Choose roomy footwear and reduce friction while you arrange advice from a dermatologist, podiatrist, or primary-care clinician. Take a clear photograph and compare it over time without irritating the area. Assessment may include looking and feeling the lesion; further testing is chosen when its depth, structure, or cause is unclear.

Do not apply a strong acid, freeze treatment, or leftover medicine to an undiagnosed foot lump. Treatment depends on the cause and may include pressure relief, care for infection, removal, or an injection into the lesion when appropriate. An intralesional steroid injection is one option used for selected inflammatory skin problems, not a universal treatment.

Arrange prompt medical care if the lump becomes rapidly larger, very painful, hot, or increasingly red; if pus, bleeding, an open sore, fever, or red streaking develops; or if walking becomes difficult. Seek earlier assessment for a persistent, hard, fixed, or changing lump, especially if you have diabetes, reduced circulation, or reduced sensation in your feet. Urgent help is appropriate for severe swelling with marked colour change or loss of feeling.
