What should you know about lumps in the skin on your arms?

The arms commonly experience friction, sun exposure, shaving, insect bites, and contact with new products. These can irritate follicles or trigger a local skin reaction. A soft, mobile lump may feel different from a firm bump attached to the skin. Boils are often tender, warm, and inflamed; a persistent crusted or bleeding surface lesion should also be checked because Basal Cell Carcinoma can present as a changing skin growth. The location on an arm does not establish the cause, and several separate lumps may have different explanations.

Check whether each lump changes in size, colour, tenderness, or surface. Photograph it in consistent lighting and avoid rubbing, picking, or trying to drain it. Use gentle, fragrance-free cleansing if the skin is irritated, and protect exposed areas from sun. A clinician may diagnose the lump by examination and may recommend removal or another treatment when needed. An intralesional steroid injection can be considered for selected inflammatory lesions, but it is not a general treatment for unexplained bumps.

Arrange a review if a lump remains, enlarges, becomes hard or fixed, or changes the skin above it. Seek prompt care for warmth, spreading redness, pus, severe pain, fever, or a red line moving up the arm. Urgent assessment is sensible when swelling follows a significant injury or is accompanied by numbness, weakness, or difficulty moving the arm. Mention whether there are similar lumps elsewhere.

Ask whether the lump is superficial or deeper, what features make it reassuring or concerning, whether it needs testing, and how to care for the surrounding skin.
