What should you know about lumpectomy operation?

The specimen is sent for pathology, and the final shape depends on the tumour’s position and the amount removed.

Imaging or a wire, seed, or other marker may guide the surgeon to a small or difficult-to-feel area. You will receive instructions about fasting, medicines, transport, and the type of anaesthetic. The team may also assess nearby lymph nodes. Pathology can report the tumour features and whether the margins are clear enough for the planned treatment. Lumpectomy is often considered for selected Breast Cancer cases and some presentations of Paget Disease of the Breast. Mastectomy is a different operation that removes more breast tissue.

Plan a ride home and keep essential items within easy reach. Wear the support garment recommended by your team, take medicines as directed, and protect the incision while it heals. Gentle shoulder movement may be advised to reduce stiffness, but lifting and strenuous activity may need to wait. Attend the results visit: the report may influence whether Radiotherapy, additional surgery, or another treatment is discussed. Contact the team if instructions are unclear rather than changing wound care yourself.

Seek prompt advice for fever, spreading redness, warmth, pus, worsening pain, a wound opening, or bleeding that continues after pressure. Ask for urgent help if you develop chest pain, severe difficulty breathing, collapse, or rapidly increasing swelling. New numbness or arm swelling also deserves assessment, particularly if it is worsening.

Ask how the tumour will be located, where the scar will sit, whether lymph nodes will be checked, and when pathology results should arrive. Clarify expected restrictions, scar care, breast changes, the possibility of a further operation, and how Radiotherapy would be scheduled if recommended.
